Streets are places. They do not only provide means of vehicular circulation but they are the space residents share in a neighbourly way, a place where they belong. The design of the movement network also includes well designed pedestrian routes that become places people can enjoy as they circulate towards their destination.

1.4 Walkable

The design of walkable neighbourhoods depends highly on the road infrastructure, its shape and size, the position of crossings and the provision of clear, safe pathways. Good access from all new dwellings by public transport is important, aiming for a maximum walk distance to bus stops of 350 meters. Public transport stops shall be in well-used places, ensuring they are accessible for all.

Crossings should always be positioned to make walking routes shorter, easier and more amenable. The radii, curvature, width and materials of roads and streets have a direct impact on our perception of the environment.

The more car-led the design is or the longer the walking distances, the less likely to walk and cycle people will be. If good, safe and direct paths connect interesting places together, people will walk more. Nottingham City Council will not support gated homes or gated clusters of homes, as these often result in increased walking distances.

Providing direct, safe, interesting walking paths is so important because we, as a society, are facing a time when obesity is at its peak, especially among children. Good design can help getting people to walk more. Continuous footways should be taken across private accesses and the mouths of minor road junctions to slow traffic at this potential conflict point and give effective priority to pedestrians.

Design Criteria

1.4.1 The scheme has good access to public transport and good walking and cycling routes connecting the development to help reduce car dependency.

1.4.2 Crossings are positioned to make walking routes shorter, easier and more amenable.

1.4.3 The radii, curvature, width and materials of roads and streets have been designed to make the environment more walkable.
