2.2 Distinctive streets & spaces
Nottingham City Council is committed to maintaining and enhancing the sense of place that makes our city different to everywhere else in the world; in design terms this is called distinctiveness. The design of streets is a key factor in achieving a sense of place and hierarchical character zones within a development. This will involve the design of a street hierarchy that defines the functions of the various streets.
For example, which street will need to carry buses, which one will be the main cycling routes, and which one will function as important public spaces. It may be appropriate to use higher quality materials, landscape features and street furniture at key locations within the street network to enhance the street status and add character drawing on local context. These measures should be discussed and agreed with the various departments of Nottingham City Council at the Developed Design Stage (for application), including the possible application of commuted sums.
Design Criteria
2.2.1 The street design, structure, hierarchy, composition and naming were informed by the local area.
2.2.2 The street design proposals incorporate relevant assets from the context, such as views, existing landscape, topography or infrastructure.
2.2.3 Materiality and details have been selected to reflect or draw upon the local distinctiveness of the area.
