Nigel was involved in securing the design quality of multi-million regeneration projects across Nottingham, focusing on people-led design, place identity and design in context. Over the last few decades, he championed innovative planning processes and quality assurance systems to improve design in Nottingham whilst up-skilling staff and those involved in decision taking. He led on the redesign of a number of streets and spaces within the city, as part of the Place-making agenda; including the redesign of the Old Market Square. He also led a number of design competitions for some high profile buildings including The Pod and the early concepts of The Nottingham Contemporary. He coordinated some nationally recognised design guides, including the Streetscape Design Manual and the City Centre Urban Design Guide and the Heritage Strategy. He has worked on the re-modelling of The south side of the city, including the Broad Marsh and attempting to raise the quality of the city’s neighbourhoods, through the Design Quality Framework.
